Titled Hell’s Angel Part 2, this issue drags Steve into an unfamiliar battlefield that is exactly what it sounds like, a literal version of Hell, where he finds himself forced into an uneasy alliance with the same villain responsible for putting him there in the first place, Victor von Doom.

Zdarsky’s run has always been willing to push Captain America into unexpected territory, but pairing Steve with his most persistent enemy in the afterlife itself is easily one of the boldest swings this creative team has taken so far.

The premise here is a direct escalation of everything that has been building since the One World Under Doom storyline.

After Doom’s apparent death and eventual return, he largely stepped back from the spotlight, but Captain America Issue 13 (2026) makes it clear his influence never really stopped rippling through the wider Marvel Universe.

Rather than simply defeating Steve in a straightforward physical fight, Doom goes after something far more personal, capturing his soul and dragging him somewhere reality itself works differently, forcing Cap to rely purely on his instincts and core values in a realm where none of his usual advantages apply.

What makes this issue so unusual is the team-up at its center. Steve Rogers and Doctor Doom working together is not something readers get to see very often, and Zdarsky leans into just how uncomfortable that alliance is for Steve specifically.

Trapped in Hell after arriving there in a coma last issue, Steve has to accept Doom’s help just to have any chance of getting out, and the price of that escape is not small either, the two of them need to actually liberate Hell from Mephisto and install a new ruler in his place.

It is a genuinely strange, almost surreal premise for a Captain America story, and Zdarsky commits to it fully rather than treating it as a quick detour before returning to more familiar ground.

The dynamic between these two characters carries a lot of the issue’s tension. Doom has never been the kind of villain who does anything purely out of altruism, and Steve knows that better than almost anyone in the Marvel Universe.

Every page of dialogue between them carries an undercurrent of suspicion, Steve constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop while still needing Doom’s knowledge of this realm to survive it.

That uneasy balance of necessity and distrust gives Captain America Issue 13 (2026) a different kind of tension than a typical hero versus villain confrontation, since the two of them are technically on the same side for now, even if neither fully trusts the other’s motives.

Artist Ton Lima takes over art duties for this arc, and Captain America Issue 13 (2026) benefits from a distinct visual shift to match the otherworldly setting.

Lima’s take on Hell feels genuinely haunting rather than just generically dark, giving the book a dynamic, unsettling energy that separates this arc visually from Steve’s usual grounded, street level adventures.

That shift in tone matters a lot for a story built around Cap being completely out of his depth, since the artwork itself needs to sell just how far outside his usual world Steve has been pulled.

Colorist Romulo Fajardo Jr. and letterer Joe Caramagna round out the creative team, keeping the atmosphere consistently oppressive without sacrificing readability during the issue’s more dialogue heavy stretches between Steve and Doom.
