Plot Overview – The Emotional Core of Peter Parker

The Amazing Spider-Man Issue 35 is a masterclass in character-driven storytelling, focusing on the emotional turmoil Peter Parker has been experiencing since the revelation that Aunt May has a biological son, Cormac Crane . The issue opens with Peter avoiding his feelings by diving headfirst into his superhero work, volunteering for the newly revamped Damage Control . This is pure Peter Parker—when confronted with complicated emotions, he chooses to be “very, very busy” .

Luke Cage, however, sees right through him. Their conversation in the gym is a standout moment, as Luke doesn’t need Peter to explain what’s happening. When Peter talks about how satisfying Damage Control work is because problems can simply be fixed and cleared away, Luke responds with the emotional equivalent of, “Uh-huh. And how’s that metaphor working out for you?” . This scene highlights the central theme of the issue: Peter cannot web-swing away from his feelings forever.

The emotional payoff comes when Aunt May finally confronts Peter at his apartment. Instead of a massive argument, Joe Kelly delivers something much quieter and more powerful . May admits that Peter pulling away hurts her, and Peter finally tells her what he’s been feeling. He is happy for her, but Cormac’s arrival has changed something fundamental in their relationship. He has always been May’s son—Cormac may be her biological child, but Peter is the boy she raised .

May’s answer is exactly what Peter—and the reader—needs to hear. Cormac doesn’t replace him. Nothing can replace the life May, Ben, and Peter shared together. The moment when Peter finally lets himself collapse into Aunt May’s arms is a lovely payoff to several issues of emotional dodging .

The Ghost-Spider Mystery and Damage Control’s True Colors

Just as Peter finds a moment of peace, the issue pivots to superhero action. Spider-Man encounters Gwen Stacy, aka Ghost-Spider, in the middle of absolute destruction, and his Spider-Sense immediately starts screaming . Even worse, Gwen attacks him with a level of ferocity that genuinely rattles Peter. He knows something is wrong because this simply isn’t the Gwen he knows .

What makes this encounter work is its efficiency. The fight doesn’t become a prolonged “heroes misunderstand each other and punch for six pages” routine. Gwen snaps out of it quickly—and she is terrified. She doesn’t know what happened. She doesn’t know what she did . Once another explosion sends everything crashing down, Peter and Gwen immediately switch into rescue mode.

Agent Griffyn, who has been a dependable new ally for Peter, arrives and sees Gwen as a threat that needs to be contained . Peter immediately plants himself between her and Damage Control, creating friction that will likely have lasting consequences . The mystery of Ghost-Spider’s condition—and why she asks to see Norman Osborn—is a compelling hook for future issues .

The Devastating Final Page

The issue ends with one of the most heartbreaking cliffhangers in recent Spider-Man history. Peter gets a phone call. It is not Aunt May on the other line but her boyfriend, Ric Bernal, informing him that she has suffered a stroke . This devastating news comes right after Peter and May’s heartfelt conversation, where she assured him she was “not going anywhere” .

The timing makes the blow even more cruel. With Amazing Spider-Man #1000 coming next, Peter Parker is heading into the milestone issue with Gwen’s terrifying mystery unresolved, his relationship with Damage Control strained, and his Aunt May in critical condition .

Critical Reception

The Amazing Spider-Man Issue 35 has received an overall critic rating of 8.4 on Comic Book Roundup, reflecting mostly positive reviews . Fanlight Zone awarded the issue a perfect 10, calling it a “fantastic issue that really takes a wild turn at the end” and praising Joe Kelly for laying the groundwork beautifully for issue #1000 . AIPT gave the issue a 9.0, noting that it “does exactly what a penultimate milestone issue needs to do, putting Peter Parker’s personal life under serious pressure while keeping the superhero action moving” .
